Bagga
An Agricultural and fishing people on the coast of Guinea, are renowned for some of their sculptures. The Baga of Upper Guinea are divided into independent villages linked together only by the Simo, an initiatory brotherhood that makes use of masks and figures.

Anok (bird heads), were used at harvest time and funerary rites, also by members of the Simo Society. The head, which is hollowed out, has lozenge forms through which small horns filled with a magical substance is fitted. The protective role of the Elek explains the presence of holes in the head; horns filled with magic powders and unguents, usually kept in baskets were attached there. The Elek was present at funerals of family heads, adult members of the group, neighbors, allies and all other important persons.

Elek-Also known as a-Tshol by the Baga and as Ninte Kamatshol by the Nalu. This figure has human traits but features a long bird's beak and was meant to protect the Lineage against the forces of evil. The oldest Simo Cult member was assigned to activate the Elek's power.
